Frequently Asked Questions

What is the new I-O Psychology certification?

The Psychological Specialty in Industrial Organizational Psychology certification (PSI-O) is a professional credential designed to validate the expertise and skills of practitioners in the field of Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Developed by the Psychological Credentialing Center (PCC) and endorsed by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), the certification ensures that certified professionals meet rigorous standards of knowledge, practice, and ethical conduct

Why is the credential needed?

The field of I-O Psychology is expanding in both scope and influence, addressing critical organizational challenges such as talent management, employee well-being, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development. However, there has been a growing need for standardized benchmarks to:

  • Demonstrate Expertise: Provide employers, clients, and peers with a trusted credential that ensures the practitioner has mastered key competencies.

  • Advance Professional Standards: Set a recognized standard of excellence in the field.

  • Foster Consumer Trust: Verify that certified individuals have met established standards of expertise, increasing public confidence.

  • Enhance Branding: Elevate the visibility of I-O psychology as a recognized and distinct profession with identified standards.

  • Support Career Growth: Help practitioners gain credibility, increase their marketability, and advance their careers.

The need for a formal credential in I-O Psychology has been discussed for many years, as it remains one of the few professions without a standardized certification. This certification will address that gap by formally recognizing the unique skills and contributions of I-O psychologists, promoting the field’s professional integrity and visibility, and offering practitioners an opportunity to demonstrate they have met rigorous professional standards.

Who is developing the certification?

The certification is being developed by the Psychology Credentialing Center (PCC). PCC is a testing organization with extensive experience in certification, credential development, and I-O Psychology. SIOP has officially endorsed this examination as a recommended pathway for members to showcase their expertise and advance their professional standing in the field. SIOP members will also receive a discount. PCC is communication with SIOP regularly to ensure that the credential is aligned with the needs of the I-O psychology community

What does the certification process involve?

The certification process will include the following key steps:

  • Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must meet specific educational and/or professional criteria. The qualifications are being finalized by the PCC Subject Matter Expert Panel. It is expected that a Master’s Degree in I-O Psychology with a specified number of hours of applied work experience will be the minimum qualification for the credential.

  • Examination: Successfully passing a rigorous exam testing the knowledge, skills, and ethical practices required for the practice of I-O psychology.

  • Continuing Education: Certified professionals will need to complete ongoing professional development to maintain their credential.

Who should pursue this certification?

This certification is ideal for:

  • Practicing I-O psychologists seeking formal recognition of their expertise.

  • I-O psychologists looking to distinguish themselves within their organizations and to potential clients.

  • Academics or researchers looking to validate their applied skills.
